First International Heritage Festival

The much-loved elder sister of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Princess Galyani Vadhana

passed away on 2nd January 2008.

Following this sad loss, the respectful period of mourning which followed caused many festive and sporting events to be either postponed or cancelled. Both the Festival and the Balloon Weddings had therefore to be re-planned, and the dates rescheduled. It was decided to run the Festival from Friday 7th to Sunday 9th March, and launch the wedding couples into the sky at daybreak on Saturday 8th March. Since the previous venue at Ratchaphruek was no longer available on these dates, an alternative location had to be found.

The spacious playing field of the Chiang Mai Lanna Polytechnical College, next to Lanna Hospital and a short distance from the city centre was chosen for its accessibility, good infrastructure and resources.

The venue and layout for the International Heritage Festival, and the 'Viva in the Air' Balloon Weddings. This location is only a few kilometres from the city centre. The illustration indicates only 4 balloons. 14 balloons actually took part in the dramatic 'Musical Night Glows'

In the meantime, scores of invitations had gone out to potential exhibitors - to individuals, local businesses, clubs, associations, embassies and consulates. Some had already agreed, but alas were unable to participate due to the change of dates. Renewed and sustained efforts were therefore needed to secure participants.

Thankfully, there were some wonderful people who shared the vision, and were willing to devote the considerable time and effort needed to make it happen. You will meet some of them on the web pages that follow. Grateful thanks go to everybody who participated, for without their commitment and dedication, patience and understanding - there could have been no festival at all.
